Everyone is prone to accidents at home, especially children. That’s why accident prevention should be a priority in your home to keep your kids safe. There are some very simple things families can do to prevent home accidents.

Your kitchen is likely the most dangerous place in your home. This is simply because of the number of tools and appliances located in this room. Fortunately, with a little caution, you can make your kitchen safer.

Keep knives and other sharp tools out of children's reach. Put knives in drawers with security latches or on high shelves. Use security latches on ALL drawers and cabinets from counter top on down By locking all these storage areas, you not only protect your little explorer from the contents, but also from finger pinching hazards and creating a stairway by opening the drawers.

Use only the back burners and turn pot handles inward when cooking on the stove to avoid having a hot pot pulled down onto a small child.

And, keep those handy kitchen stools put away when you’re not using them. Many home accidents are the result of children using stools to get into places that are dangerous. In addition, many children use step stools, chairs or opened drawers to reach high places, leading to a nasty fall.

Beware Of The Bathroom

Another place of concern for accident prevention is the bathroom. Never leave your child unattended in the bathtub and put a well tested latch on the toilet seat to prevent your toddler from falling into the toilet, flushing valuables and flushing clog causing items. Keep curling irons and other electrical appliances put away.

Dangerous chemicals and cleaners are often stored in bathroom cabinets, too. So, it’s wise to keep ALL your bathroom cabinets secured as well. Perfumes, deodorants, aerosol sprays, shampoos and soaps can be poisonous or dangerous. Keep them inside locked cabinets rather than on counter tops and in showers.

Secure the Stairs

While your children are toddlers, it’s important to keep baby installed gates positioned at the top and bottom of all staircases to avoid falls. In addition, keep stairs free of debris and clutter. Safety mesh is also a “must have product”. It helps prevent a child’s climbing on the outside of the stairway which frequently leads to a terrible fall.

Remove Additional Hazards

Many commonplace household items can be dangerous to children. Make certain that pencils and pens, lighters and matches as well as anything that can pass through a toilet paper roll are all put away.

Household plants are a danger due to the potential of choking on a leaf, and many are poisonous if ingested. A quick search online can provide you information about your specific plants and their safety. It’s best to keep all plant out of your child’s reach.

Accident prevention in the home is critical to ensuring your family’s safety. Fortunately, with the right products and a few hours of your time, you can help to ensure that your family’s safety is greatly enhanced.
