Important Tips for
Baby Crib Safety

It’s likely that your baby will sleep in his crib for 2-3 years. So, baby crib safety is an important topic for new parents. Your baby’s crib should be one of the safest places in your home for baby, if you just follow a few simple tips.

First and foremost, beware of old baby cribs. Though it may be tempting to use a crib that has been passed down through your family, first consider whether or not it’s safe. Check out the following items before using an old crib.

  • The mattress should be firm and fit tightly within the crib.

  • There should be no missing or broken hardware or slats.

  • Slats should be no more than 2 3/8" apart.

  • Corner posts should not be higher than 1/16".

  • There should be no design cutouts in the headboard or footboard.

When your newborn comes home from the hospital, it’s perfectly safe to have the mattress positioned at its highest point. This makes moving a sleeping baby in and out of the crib much easier.

However, as your baby grows, it’s important to make just one adjustment to the mattress height. Once baby starts to move around in the crib, the rails should always be raised to full height whenever the baby is in the crib. And, the mattress should be moved down to its lowest setting before baby begins to pull up to avoid him being able to climb out of the crib. All too often a child is injured because they fell from a crib when the mattress wasn’t at its lowest setting.

Proper Crib Placement

Where you place your crib is also an important factor in baby’s safety. If your crib is placed near a window, make certain that cords from blinds or other window treatments are tied up and out of reach. Secure blind’s cords with cleats. Attach two cleats about 9-12” apart and wrap the cord around the cleats.

In addition, make certain that baby cannot reach lamps or lamp cords. If you live in a home with radiators, make sure the crib is placed away from the radiator to prevent a contact burn.

Keep an Ear Out

Finally, baby safety monitors are a critical component of a safe nursery. Anytime you leave your baby in her crib alone, turn on the monitor so that you’re aware the moment she awakens. This supervision may be just what it takes to keep an adventurous toddler from a dangerous escape or other nursery peril.

Baby crib safety is critical to your baby’s overall safety, so be certain to take it seriously. Visit the CPSC web site for more on crib safety.
