Using Baby Gates
For Peace of Mind

Baby gates are so important to overall home safety. Once your baby becomes mobile, you’ll feel that you can’t let him out of your sight. Gone are the days when you could place your infant on a blanket on the floor and know she wasn’t going anywhere.

There are several ways to use baby gates to your advantage. Use them to keep babies in a particular room or to keep baby out of a specific room or area. It’s also critical to have one at both the bottom and the top of stair cases to keep baby from climbing and/or falling.

Most parents find that there are a couple of areas in their home where they need baby or toddler gates on a pretty permanent basis while they have a preschooler. Then, they usually also need one or two extra gates to be moved around from area to area as needed.

The Expanding Safety Zone

When your child first comes home, you have one place where safety reigns – The Crib. That’s the one place where you have control over your infant’s environment, the first safety zone.

Once your child begins to move about, you can incorporate the use of a playpen, or even better, a play coral. This is baby’s second safety zone, a place where, once again, you can exert control over the contents within that enclosed area. A walking toddler’s desire to explore is boundless and that is when the expanding safety zone’s concept becomes even more evident.

By using safety gates and the All Metal Door Top Locks, you can create a corral out of a room or a section of the home. As an example, place a gate between the family room and the kitchen and a door top lock on the hallway door and your child is now limited to exploring that one SAFE room/area/home.

Which Kind of Baby Gate is Best?

There are several types of baby gates available, and the type you need depends on the area of use and on your own personal preferences. For example, if you have an area where you know you’ll need a baby gate for a significant period of time, a gate that attaches to the wall on one side and swings open like a door is very convenient.

However, when purchasing a safety gate that will get moved around regularly and must be used in doors of several different sizes, an adjustable, pressure style gate is best.

NEVER use a pressure gate on a stairway. Even a high quality pressure gate, as the one pictured below, could be dislodged, and any gate with a threshold can cause a fall.

Before You Buy

It’s definitely a good idea to consider the following options prior to your child safety gate purchase.

  • Does the gate allow for one hand operation, for those times when your hands are full?

  • Are there any color choices?

  • Do you prefer a wood gate over a metal gate?

  • Which metal is preferred, aluminum or steel.

  • Would you like the appearance of clear panels or vertical bars?

  • Which do you want, an auto locking gate or a lift & lock style?

  • Will the gate detach for special events or when moving furniture?

  • Can I install it at an angle?

Baby safety gates have become some of the most important home safety items. Choose yours with care. The high quality, durable gates will give you years of reliable service.
