Childproofing Your Home
Meeting the safety needs of your child in your home can be easier when you follow the child proofing tips recommended on our childproofing checklist. As a new parent, you know that childproofing your home is an important task. When you consider the statement, "If a disease were killing our children at the rate that IN-HOME ACCIDENTS ARE, parents would be outraged and demand this killer be stopped!", you'll understand just how important it truly is. Many of the items used for childproofing your home can be found at your local home improvement store, but be aware that many of those "safety" products are of poor quality, design and/or durability. We have put all our recommended products through extensive trials to ensure their durability and reliability. There are many steps you can employ to childproof your home that cost nothing. Below you’ll find several child proofing tips that can improve the safety of your home. Some of them are free – and the others are low cost to allow you to perform some of the basic childproofing needs for your baby. Free Childproofing StrategiesThe first action item for childproofing your home is to clean up all items that are just lying or scattered about. Put away scissors, knives, lighters, pencils and other objects that you might not have previously thought of as dangerous. Place them in drawers where child safety locks are in use, on high shelves or locked cabinets. Next, secure heavy and tall furniture to the walls. This includes bookcases and tall chests that children could pull down onto themselves. Tie up cords used on window blinds and shades. Wrapping the cords onto cleats can provide excellent security. Children can get any cord longer than 6-7 inches easily wrapped around their necks. Move and put away breakable knick knacks like vases, framed photos and any other glass items you might have sitting on accessible tables. Not only will removing these items make your home safer, but it will prevent your treasures from being broken. Turn your hot water tank down to 120 degrees or less to help prevent a severe scald burn. Also, check for items that are small enough to fit in a child’s mouth. Anything a toddler can place in their mouth is a choking hazard. NOTE: Any object that freely passes through a toilet paper roll may be a choking hazard. Beginning Childproofing Checklist Outlet covers – Used to cover outlets to prevent shocks. We prefer the slide-by style cover and the box-type coversToilet Seat Locks – Keeps toilet lid closed to prevent drowning risk, loss of valuables and large plumbing bills after a stuffed animal get flushed. Child Safety Latches for Drawers and Cabinet Doors – Devices that make cabinet doors and drawers safer from little hands. Consider locking ALL drawers and doors throughout the home from waist level on down. Baby Gates – These are used to prevent babies from wandering from room to room as well as from falls on staircases. These are some BEGINNING STEPS to childproofing your home. Quality, durable products are of the utmost importance. Many children have suffered grave injury when a poor quality product has failed and the child gained access to hazardous materials. Quality products along with proper installation combine to help ensure your home is childproofed.
