Tips for Child Safety in the Home

Child safety in the home is, too often, overlooked. Child safety equipment provides the added layer of protection when your back is turned. All parents want their children to be safe. Parents often tend to be more worried about safety on the playground, the back yard or out at the store. A properly designed child safety harness is essential when shopping but the old adage “most accidents happen in the home” has never been truer than when talking about preschool children.

Fortunately, there are several simple things you can do to improve your child’s safety in your home. Following are some tips to help you get started on upgrading your home’s safety status.

First, make certain that your home is child proofed if you have children under the age of five. From the time children begin to scoot around until about the age of kindergarten, some of the simplest home devices are dangerous to them. Secure heavy furniture to the walls, secure cords for window blinds, latch cabinet doors and drawers and be certain to keep sharp objects locked up and out of reach for your child's protection.

Beware Of Stairs

One of the most dangerous places in your home is your stairs. For proper child safety in the home be aware of the following tips and child safety eqiupment recommendations. Toddlers are naturally curious about stairs and eager to climb them. Some tips for improving stair safety in your home include:

  • Place a secure baby gate both at the top and bottom of your stairs to prevent small children from climbing unassisted and from falling.

  • Teach your infant the "safety crawl" when on the stairs - belly down and head always higher than the feet. Teach your toddler the proper way to walk up and down stairs, holding the railing with one hand, and an adult’s hand with the other.

  • Ensure that railings are secure

  • Keep stairs free of debris and clutter

  • Place safety mesh on the balisters to prevent climbing and access to the stairs

Watch Out For Recalled Toys

One of the biggest dangers to children is recalled toys and equipment. Manufacturer’s recalls happen because of defects and potential dangers from using the toys or equipment. For your baby's continued protection keep up to date on recalls by visiting the Consumer Products Safety Commission’s website at www.cpsc.gov.

Keeping your children safe should not be a difficult task. Practicing simple techniques regularly should make child safety in the home easy and give you the peace of mind you need.
