Infant Safety While Traveling

Infant safety, just like toddler safety begins in the crib. Simple tips can help you create and maintain crib safety. Avoid the placement of cushions, bumper pads and stuffed animals in the crib. Use the Consumer Product Safety Commissions web site to review all the crib safety regulations that new(not used) cribs must pass.

Traveling with a baby can be stressful, in part because it can be difficult to ensure your child's security when you’re away from home. But, with some common sense and the right equipment, you can keep baby safe and have a great vacation.

It’s All About The Gear

When your child is an infant, keeping them safe is mostly a matter of constant observation and appropriate infant safety equipment. If you’ll be driving you must have a child safety car seat. Keep in mind that many rental car companies will provide you with a car seat along with your rental if you simply request it at the time you book your reservation.

If at all possible, secure the following items at your vacation destination (particularly if you’re flying):

  • A recent model portable crib

  • Stable high chair with proper safety straps

  • Baby Gates if baby is crawling, walking or scooting

Depending upon baby’s age, you may also need an activity center or swing to keep baby occupied and safe while you have a little break. Keep in mind that many hotels will provide portable cribs upon request, and that many vacation houses have baby equipment that you can use during your stay.

In fact, when you’re searching for places to spend your vacation, you may want to narrow your accommodation choices to those that can provide the needed toddler safety equipment.

Of course, if you’re driving to your destination, you can pack all of the equipment you’ll need in your car and bring it along. However, it’s still wise to see what baby proofing items you can secure at your destination so that you don’t wind up with a car so filled with baby equipment that there’s no room for the baby!

Traveling with a baby is always an adventure. But, with some attention to infant safety before you leave home, you’re sure to have a fun and safe holiday with baby.
