Teaching Kitchen Safety for Kids

A stove shield, an oven lock along with other basic baby proofing items are important to kitchen safety for kids, especially toddlers. All kitchen appliances as well as the cabinets and drawers require locking devices. Your kitchen is the most dangerous room in your home. Every type of pediatric injury can occur in this room; falls, burns, drowning, choking, poisoning, etc.

Start from the floor and go up from there. Open a drawer and place your hand at the bottom lip then gently close it on your fingers. Did you note the sharpness of the wood edges? Many fingers get severely hurt here. There are many more reasons to lock up All the drawers and cabinets below the counter top.

Oven and Stove Safety

Many preschoolers suffer scald and or contact type burns around the stove. Proper kitchen safety for kids requires the placement of a stove shield which helps to prevent contact with the hot surfaces and a scald burn due to pulling something down on top of them. An oven lock prevents access into a hot oven and also helps to prevent finger damage that may occur when a little hand gets caught in the slamming oven door.Never leave them alone when the stove or oven are in use.

Keep sharp instruments out of their reach at all times. Lock up your butcher-block knife holder. Here's another reason to install latches on the drawers and cabinets.

As your child gets older, it’s important to teach them the proper use of dangerous tools. Teaching them to use them properly is far safer than just having them avoid the use of the tools altogether.
