Keep Your Child Safe
From Falls:
Pediatric Trauma Prevention Tips

Pediatric trauma prevention tips are critical reading for every parent. Falls and head injuries are some of the most common and serious accidents happening to children. Though the idea of your child sustaining a head or other injury is frightening, it’s important to give this subject serious consideration so that you can help make your home safe from traumatic accidents.

Falls and traumatic events can take place indoors and outside the home, so you’ll need to take precautions in both areas. Of course, outdoor security becomes more important once children get older and play outdoors alone, while preventing indoor trauma begins as soon as your child begins to roll over and/or crawl.

There are several simple steps you can take to prevent accidents in your home. Some of the most important areas you should secure in your home include:

The Stairs

Falls down the stairs can be extremely dangerous. Prior to your child being able to crawl, securely install baby gates at both the top and bottom of the stairs. Install Safety Mesh below all second floor handrails and along the outside of the staircase. Keep stairs free of debris and clutter that could cause falls. And, be certain to teach your toddlers how to walk up and down stairs – using a handrail and holding an adult’s hand.

The Bathroom

Falls in the tub are quite common, and can be very dangerous. Be certain to never leave your child unattended in the shower or tub. Use a bathtub safety tray, full length bath mat, and cushion the sidewall as well as the tub’s water spout.

In addition, keep tile floors dry to avoid slips. Place an all metal door top lock on the door to keep your unsupervised baby out but allowing you easy access. Keep counter tops free of poisons and small choking items. Lock all cabinets and drawers.

Outside

Once your kids are old enough to play outside, be certain to keep play areas secure. Privacy fences can help keep your children contained. Play sets should be positioned on grass or other material that can cushion falls. Never install play sets over concrete or brick. If your child has a trampoline, be certain that it is completely enclosed and used only under close supervision.

It’s critical that you keep these most dangerous areas secure for pediatric trauma prevention. However, there is no substitute for parental supervision. Keeping a watchful eye on your children every minute of the day is the best way to ensure their safety.
