Teaching Your Toddler About Stair Safety
Be ready to provide stair safety for your little one. Baby gates provide protection. A properly installed stairway gate can be a lifesaving investment. Once your child learns to crawl, you can bet he’ll be anxious to climb the stairs. Teaching your toddler to be safe on the stairs can save his life as well as his limbs. Begin this teaching process as soon as he can crawl to the stairs. Teach him to ALWAYS have his belly down and his head above his feet(crawling position) whether ascending or descending the stairs. ALWAYS make sure there is an adult on the stairs, below your child to stop a tumble. First, it’s important to note that one of the most important aspects of toddler stairway safety is that they should never be allowed to navigate stairs alone. Use properly installed baby gates at the top and bottom of the stairs to help prevent accidents. NEVER use pressure gates at either entry onto the stairs. Teach Safe MethodsOnce your child has learned how to walk teach your toddler that he must go up and down stairs only when he’s with an adult. Using baby gates will ensure that he can’t try to go it alone. Then, when you do walk up and down the stairs with him, make sure he holds the railing with one hand and your hand with the other. Talk about “walking safe” so that the idea of using railings and adult help becomes his natural way of navigating the stairs.Keep It Clutter FreeKeeping your staircase clutter free is another great way to ensure that your stairs are safe for all members of the family. Toys, shoes and other items should be stored elsewhere, leaving a clear path. While you have a toddler, you might want to have carpet or a runner on your stairs. The carpeting can act as a shock absorber if the child should have a tumble, thus helping to minimize an injury. Hardwood or tiled stairs can be very slippery for toddlers, particularly if they’re only wearing socks. Another, often overlooked aspect of stairway safety is the possibility that a child can access the stairs through the balusters, and/or a toddler can climb the outside of a staircase by holding onto the balusters while stepping on the outer lip of the stairs. Safety Mesh is easy to install and doesn't require any holes to be drilled into the wood works. The Mesh should be installed on the outside of the handrail to provide the most protection. Stairs and toddlers can be a scary combination for parents. But, teaching your child to use the stairs and to use appropriate stair safety Gates and Mesh should help ensure that your home is safe and happy.
