Toddler Safety
for the Traveling Family

Few things are more stressful than traveling with a toddler. Toddler safety during a vacation can be one of a parent’s biggest concerns, but with a little planning ahead, vacations can be fun, safe and filled with nothing but good memories.

First, consider your method of transportation. If you’re driving to your destination, you’ll be able to take along whatever you need to make your child’s stay safer, such as a baby gate and portable crib. However, if you’re flying, you will likely be limited to a stroller, a car seat and a few other safety items we highly recommend.

There are three items, the “Traveling Three”, we never recommend you use in your baby’s home, but find useful when traveling. Door knob covers, externally applied cabinet latches and electrical plug inserts should not be used for long term safety. Children tend to get through these three safety products while still far too young to understand the hazards that they then have access to.

If you use them at home and baby gets through them, then you have nothing to travel with. When other better quality and functioning products are used in the home, then the “Traveling Three” can have a profound effect on toddler safety when visiting relatives or staying in a hotel.

If you are flying, try making arrangements at your destination for the safety items you’ll require. For example, many hotels and even some vacation homes have access to portable cribs if you book far enough in advance and let them know your needs. Vacation houses may even be able to provide baby gates if you request them. In addition, many rental car companies will rent you a car seat right along with your rental car, allowing you to leave your personal car seat at home.

Staying With Relatives

It might seem that staying with relatives during your vacation will make things easier – and sometimes that is the case. You may be able to ask your hosts to borrow some baby equipment, such as a portable crib, from friends if they don’t have one in their home.

On the other hand, bringing a toddler with you to stay with relatives can also be stressful, particularly if they don’t have small children in their home. It might be wise to discuss the childproofing of their home before you visit. Gently remind them that they may want to put away breakable items and sharp items like scissors and ink pens. If they don’t have security items like outlet covers and security locks for kitchen cabinets, you’ll be glad these items are packed in your suitcase.

Taking Care of a Vacation Home

If you’re planning a fun vacation at a beach house or other vacation home, make plans to spend your first few hours at your destination making the house safe for your child. Ask the rental agent about items like outlet covers and security items for cabinet doors. If they don’t have these, again, bring along your own.

Then, when you arrive, put all dangerous objects and breakables away and out of baby’s reach. Your stay will be so much more relaxing when you have toddler safety under control and know you don’t have to worry about chasing your toddler around every second.
